STIR/SHAKEN helps phone networks verify that caller ID information has not been spoofed in transit. Press 1 Voice can support authenticated calling workflows as part of a broader caller identity and reputation setup.
STIR/SHAKEN is a framework used by participating voice providers to authenticate caller ID information and help receiving networks evaluate whether the calling number was legitimately used.
STIR/SHAKEN helps authenticate the caller ID information attached to a call. It is intended to make caller ID spoofing harder and give receiving networks more information about the origin of a call.
The exact implementation depends on your voice provider and network path, but the basic process follows the same idea.
A participating originating provider creates a signed identity token for the call.
The provider includes information about the calling number and its level of confidence in the caller’s right to use it.
A terminating provider can validate the signature and use the result as one input when handling the call.
The attestation level indicates how much confidence the originating provider has in the caller’s identity and right to use the displayed number.
The provider knows the customer and has a high level of confidence that the customer is authorized to use the calling number.
The provider knows the customer, but may not have the same level of confidence that the customer controls the displayed calling number.
The provider is carrying the call into the network but has limited information about the caller or their right to use the number.
Authentication depends on your provider relationship, number ownership, and calling setup. A clean process makes it easier to maintain the right configuration.
Support authenticated caller identity across voter contact, fundraising, and volunteer campaigns.
Keep issue campaigns and supporter outreach tied to approved calling identities.
Use verified caller identity as part of donor, volunteer, and supporter communications.
Keep member outreach and organizing calls connected to approved numbers.
Support consistent caller identity across chapters, regions, and membership programs.
Use authenticated numbers for reminders, notifications, and outbound service campaigns.
Keep caller identity, campaign permissions, number reputation, and outreach rules working together.
We use several campaign numbers, so having the caller identity setup documented and consistent saves us a lot of confusion.
The important part for us is knowing which numbers are approved for each region and keeping that separate from spam-label monitoring.
Caller authentication is one of those things we do not want volunteers or staff thinking about during a shift. It should already be set up correctly.
We mainly wanted one place where the calling numbers, campaign assignments, and authentication status were easier to understand.
Keeping caller ID authentication and reputation monitoring as separate checks has made our process much cleaner.
We’ll walk through your calling numbers, campaign structure, and the authentication workflow available for your setup.
